What kind of game is it?

A sandbox, not a campaign you finish

The store describes it as “a Three Kingdoms sandbox RPG [that] lets you do whatever you wish in the late Han Dynasty.” In practice that means you pick a role, a scenario and a region, then live inside a simulated century rather than follow one story.

01 · World

Three tiers, 200+ counties

A strategic world map, individual cities, and local scenes you can walk into. Version 1.0 converted every village into a county with its own map — over 200 of them — and counties now work as defensive nodes you can invest in and build inside.

02 · Scale

20+ scenarios, 1,300+ officers

Scenarios run from the Yellow Turban Rebellion to the Battle of Xiling, with over 1,300 historical officers and 2,000+ animated portraits. The studio counts over 2 million words of historical event text. You can also create your own officer before starting.

03 · Combat

Three ways to fight

Real-time Legion Battles across 100+ maps in five types (field, siege, county, naval, pass), plus turn-based card Combat and Debates. More than 30 troop types, officer skills and formations decide the outcome.

About the game

What is Heroes' Vow: Three Kingdoms?

Heroes' Vow: Three Kingdoms is a single-player sandbox RPG set in the late Han dynasty, developed by Free Wing and published by Free Wing with NPC Entertainment. It runs on Windows and entered Early Access on March 25, 2025; the full 1.0 release arrived on September 23, 2026.

You pick a seat inside a simulated century rather than follow one scripted story: a ruler building a domain, an officer serving a lord, a free officer raising private troops, or a hermit. Three combat modes, 20+ starting scenarios and more than 1,300 historical officers sit behind that freedom.

It is out of Early Access and still moving

Updated for v1.0.1 · checked 2026-09-24

1.0 shipped on September 23, 2026 — and that same release is the first time the game had an English version at all.

Early Access began on March 25, 2025, so this is the end of an eighteen-month run. The studio's own announcement says: “After a year and a half of updates and improvements since our Early Access launch, we are officially releasing the Full Version today!” English, Japanese, Korean and Traditional Chinese were all added in that same update. The headline additions are the county system and the family system — both described by the studio as frameworks that will keep growing.

  • ABSENTTurn-based tactical legion battles are not in 1.0

The studio said on day one that it had “overestimated our abilities and underestimated the time required to redo a main combat gameplay” — the basic functions exist, but it still needs polishing, and “it will definitely be released later.” Treat any guide claiming it is available as wrong.

  • PENDINGSome interface text is still Chinese, and the studio admits names and terms are inaccurate in places

The day-one post names three multi-language problems directly: beginner instructions with no localized version, “some places still being in Chinese”, and “inaccurate names and terms”. So in-game officer and skill names in English should be treated as provisional.

Change triggerA first-party multi-language fix list, or a version bump that documents translation changes.

  • PENDINGOld Early Access saves: “basically compatible”, with a rollback branch available

The studio says the new version is basically compatible with old saves “in current testing” but that players still report concerns. You can switch back to the old build under Properties → Betas → ea.version.

Change triggerA first-party save-compatibility statement once 1.0 has been out longer, or removal of the ea.version branch.

  • VERIFIEDNo multiplayer, no co-op

The Steam feature list is single-player only: Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud and Family Sharing. Nothing suggests online play is planned.

  • VERIFIEDNo console or mobile version announced

SteamDB lists the supported system as Windows only. There is no first-party statement about PlayStation, Xbox or Switch, and no mobile release.

Common questions

Answers, with the date they were checked

Is Heroes' Vow: Three Kingdoms still in Early Access?checked 2026-09-24

No. It released on September 23, 2026 (07:03:54 UTC) as version 1.0.1, after Early Access that started on March 25, 2025. The Steam store page now shows only the full release date.

“Hero's Ambition”, “Legend of Heroes”, “Legend of Three Kingdoms” — which name is right?checked 2026-09-24

The official English name is Heroes' Vow: Three Kingdoms. Two other spellings circulate in good faith: the Steam description body calls it “Hero's Ambition: Three Kingdoms”, and the IGDB database lists it as “Legend of Heroes: Three Kingdoms”. Confusingly, the shorter phrase “legend of three kingdoms” mostly points at other works. We break the names apart here →

Does it have English voice acting?checked 2026-09-24

No. English ships with interface text and subtitles only. Full audio is Simplified Chinese; Japanese, Korean and Traditional Chinese also have subtitles but no recorded audio.

Is it multiplayer?checked 2026-09-24

No — single-player only. There is no co-op and no PvP; the Steam feature list is Single-player plus Achievements, Cloud and Family Sharing.

Can I keep playing my Early Access save?checked 2026-09-24

The studio says the new version is basically compatible with old saves in its current testing, while acknowledging player concern. If you hit problems you can switch to the old build via Properties → Betas → ea.version.

Is it on PS5, Xbox, Switch or mobile?checked 2026-09-24

Not announced. As of 2026-09-24 the supported system is Windows only, and there is no first-party port statement. Be careful: mobile store searches for similar names surface a different game, Three Kingdoms: Legends of War.

Does it support mods or the Steam Workshop?checked 2026-09-24

Yes. The game has a Steam Workshop, and the items live when this was checked were mostly officer-portrait replacements, alongside a few utility and overhaul mods (the listings are largely Chinese-language). The store page's own feature list does not mention Workshop — the feature tags and the Workshop are separate things — so treat mod support as community-driven rather than a headline feature.
